Home Security Spotlight

Warning: Your home is wide open to burglars unless you put in place a full range of effective home security measures

House Security

The purpose of taking measures to improve the security of your property is to make you and your house a less tempting target. The more difficulties you cause for the potential burglar. the more likely he is to move on to a softer target.

The burglar is looking for a quick and unobserved 'in and out'. Every additional security measure you can put in place slows down the burglar and makes it more likely he will be spotted before he can do his 'work'.

Regular lifestle patterns makes the burglar's life easier and these patterns are what a potential burglar will try to spot. For example. an empty drive could mean that no one is at home. So try to hide your routine and lifestyle patterns.  Try to vary the way in which you use your cars so that a potential burglar can never be sure that you are away from home if there is no car in the drive.

Take commonsense security measures:

  • Always lock garages, sheds, greenhouses and other outbuildings

  • Remove and secure ladders and other tools and equipment that could be stolen and used by criminals to break into your home

  • Take steps to secure access to flat roofs and make sure that any second floor windows accessible from flat roofs are as secure as they can be

  • Make vehicles as secure as you can. Use the garage

  • Put up signs saying that the premises are protected. This shows criminals that you have taken taken action to protect your property

  • Put up a 'beware of the dog' sign or leave some dog toys on the patio  even if you don't have a dog

  • When you go out make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked

  • When you are out leave some lights on and leave the radio tuned to a talk station

  • Blinds or net curtains at windows greatly reduce visibility for the criminals.  If they can see inside and spot expensive goods are more ikely to enter premises.

  • Invest in a burglar alarm.  They vary greatly in price and the most effective alarms or monitored.  When an alarm sounds the staff call the police.  Some companies provide dual burglar and fire alarm systems; they will call the appropriate , emergency services , depending on the alarm activation.

  • Alternatively you can buy dummy alarmed boxes and dummy CCTV cameras.  These may be enough to put off an opportunist thief.
