Control Access to the Property
Controlling access to the property is very important. If a criminal cannot gain access they cannot commit a crime. It is not possible to make property absolutely secure, but you can reduce the ease of access and control access to make it as secure as you reasonably can. It has been known for criminals to bring a removal lorry and clear a house when the owners are away on holiday. Other criminals have driven cars off drives.
There are limits to what you can do in controlling access to your property to make it secure.
- Planning laws restrict the sort of fence you can erect around your property
- You must retain ease of access for yourself and for genuine visitors
- You must take into account what will your security measures look like to the neighbours
- The cost must not be prohibitive

The aim is not to turn the property into an unassailable fortress; it is to take reasonable steps to secure the property to the point that criminal will see our countermeasures and walk past to look for an easier target. |
Security measures you can install to control access
- Erect fences and side gates that will deny criminals easy access to the rear of the property
- Lock the gates to the drive and side gates to prevent anyone from easily taking a vehicle or entering and stealing from your property
- Consider installing electronic security gates (electric or remote control gates)
- Instal lighting that can be triggered by movement sensors.
